Use of the Halter in Dog Training

The dog training Halter is a valuable tool for working with large, strong, boisterous or aggressive dogs, but is also very helpful for timid dogs, dogs that have had injuries, or dogs whose owners have physical injuries or handicaps that make training with a chain collar difficult.
Much less physical effort is required to control a dog when using a training Halter. As well, it acts as a calming influence by reminding dominant dogs that they are subordinate to the handler, and gives timid or fearful dogs confidence as they realize that someone else is in charge so they don’t have to assume that unwanted role themselves.
A Halter provides a very safe way to handle both aggressive dogs and fear-biters, as the mouth can be closed and the head turned away simply by pulling on the leash. This makes it a very effective and humane tool for all types of dogs and handlers of all skill levels.
Because it has a band that fits over the top of the nose some people mistake it for a muzzle, but the dog Halter is fashioned after a horse Halter and works in a similar way. A good Halter allows the dog to open his mouth freely, drink, pant and behave normally when in the relaxed position. It is only if the dog pulls that the Halter tightens momentarily, reminding the dog to relax.
As with all training equipment, proper fit is extremely important. Many dogs fit a standard size, but if necessary a custom size can be provided. Dogs of all sizes and shapes can use a Halter, from Papillion through Bulldog to Wolfhound to Russian Sheepdog, and everything in between.
Once introduced to the Halter, most dogs readily accept it and are able to be walked and handled with much greater ease. Elm Obedience School has successfully used the Halter for over 20 years and has extensive experience in its use for dogs of all types and sizes, with many saved dog/owner relationships.
